Miles Community College Now Offers Degrees in Insurance Business

Miles Community College has been approved to offer an Associate of Applied Science (AAS) and an (Associate of Science) AS in insurance. The AAS is a two-year degree program that will prepare the student to sit for their Montana producer’s licensure exam at the conclusion of the program. In addition, they will have acquired business skills that will help them manage an insurance business. Courses in insurance range from property, personal and commercial insurance taught by a certified insurance agent, while the business classes will include accounting, business writing, business law and management to name a few. For a complete listing of classes in the AAS in Insurance program, log onto http://milescc.edu/DegreesPrograms/Business/aasinsurance.htm.

The AS in insurance is for the student who is interested in transferring to a four-year program in risk management or actuary science, and other positions in the insurance industry that require a four-year degree. To look at the scope and sequence in this program, type http://milescc.edu/DegreesPrograms/Business/aasinsurance.htm.  Each program is designed to be completed in four semesters over a two-year period; however, students may take the program on a part-time basis and complete one or two classes a semester. An advisor will be available to create a plan of study with the student. Often, previous general education credits may be accepted.

Both programs are offered entirely online, so students do not have to live in the Miles City area to complete this program. All online classes include discussions with the instructor and other students on a weekly basis. In addition, projects will take students to insurance providers in their community for real-world learning opportunities. An internship is also part of the program. The internship can be completed in an insurance office near the student’s home, or at a larger producer’s headquarters.

To talk to an advisor, or to start the application process, contact Erin Niedge at (406) 874-6211. You may also e-mail her at niedgee@milescc.edu.  Erin will also send you additional information on the program and Miles Community College if interested.
