Miles Community College reported increased fall enrollment
for the third straight year. The official third week enrollment
numbers were presented to the Board of Trustees during the
September board meeting by Vice President of Student Success and
Institutional Research, Darren Pitcher. According to the report,
the school has seen a 10% increase in non-restricted credit
enrollment Full Time Equivalents (FTE). The increase was
attributed to a larger than expected freshman class which saw an
additional 27 students compared to last years’ numbers. Pitcher
also stated that “students are taking more credits which also
increase the FTE number”. Out of state students were reported as
almost identical to last year. The Grow Eastern Montana plan
which was designed to attract out of state students is in its
first year. According to Pitcher, “since the plan was approved
so late last May the school hasn’t had time to send recruiters
into those states”. The total gross FTE number was reported as
461.86 up from 453.335 a year ago. “However, due to some changes
in reporting” says Pitcher, “That number may not tell the whole
story”. The college decided to not input High School dual
enrollment courses until the Spring report. High School dual
enrollment accounted for close to 30 additional FTE last year.
Pitcher expects that number to remain stable and looks forward
to the final numbers in January. Had the dual enrollment numbers
been reported similar to last year, the schools total FTE would
have been around the 490 mark. It would have been the highest
enrollment MCC has seen since 2004. Pitcher also reported a
record number of students now living in the college’s residence
halls. “We have no more room in the dorms or in the parking lot”
stated Pitcher, “All in all; things are looking very, very good.
