MCC Provides GPS/GIS Training for Agriculture

The Miles Community College Center for Distance Education and Community Outreach (DECO) will host
“GPS/GIS Applications for Agriculture” on Friday, April 9 from 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. in Room 314. This training will provide seven hours of elective real estate continuing education credits for participants. Dr. Van Shelhamer will teach the course and is an approved real estate continuing education instructor.
Participants will receive hands-on experience in the following areas:
• GPS principles, limitations, and restrictions
• Collect field data using a GPS receiver that is provided (Garmin 76 and 60 receivers)
• Create tentative map boundaries around features using waypoints and tracks
• Using free software, transfer GPS field data to laptop computers for use in maps
• Transfer GPS data to free web viewers, Google Earth or ArcGIS Explorer
• Transfer data back into a GPS unit or a Personal Navigation Device (PND) for sharing with others
• Create boundaries and waypoints without actually going to features
• Navigate to unknown locations using coordinates and GPS receivers
• Navigate within boundaries using the GPS or PND
