HELENA, MONTANA: Hattie Bumgarner, a sophomore at Miles Community College (MCC), has been recognized with the prestigious Montana Student Volunteer Award for 2025. The award, presented through a partnership between the Governor’s Office of Community Service and the Montana Campus Network for Civic Engagement (MCNCE), honors college students who have demonstrated outstanding commitment to service while pursuing their education.
Bumgarner, who serves as Secretary of the Associated Students of Miles Community College (ASMCC), is widely known on campus for her leadership and volunteerism. Her contributions span a variety of roles including Resident Assistant in Pioneer Hall, events coordinator for Phi Theta Kappa, and Vice President of the MCC Young Farmers and Ranchers Club.
Through her work with Phi Theta Kappa, she has organized and participated in numerous service initiatives such as food pantry support, food bank drives, and the Toys for Tots campaign. She also volunteers with the Cascade County Farm Bureau and represents the college as a Pioneer Ambassador.
“These students help us remember that even with our busy lives, it’s possible to give back in thoughtful and significant ways,” said Josh Vanek of the MCNCE. “We appreciate the service they provide to Montana communities and thank them for their commitment.”
Throughout her time at MCC, Bumgarner has been actively involved in various extracurricular activities while excelling academically. She has been a member of the Women’s Pioneer Volleyball team for the past two seasons and is a dedicated member of Phi Theta Kappa, the Young Farmers and Ranchers Club, and Student Senate. In addition, she has contributed to campus life by serving as a Resident Assistant in Pioneer Village, demonstrating her leadership and commitment to fostering a strong student community while also working in the MCC Cafeteria.
“These students help us remember that even with our busy lives, it’s possible to give back in thoughtful and significant ways,” said Josh Vanek of the MCNCE. “We appreciate the service they provide to Montana communities and thank them for their commitment.”
Bumgarner is one of 15 students statewide being honored for their civic contributions. A virtual ceremony held on April 24th celebrated the awardees, each receiving a certificate signed by Governor Greg Gianforte and their respective college presidents.
