Pioneer Profiles: Meet Candy Laney

MILES CITY, MONTANA: If you’ve ever stepped into the President’s Office at Miles Community College (MCC), you’ve likely been greeted by the warm and welcoming presence of Candy Laney. As the Executive Assistant to the President and Board of Trustees for the past 15 years, Candy is the friendly face and steady hand that keeps everything running smoothly.

A Miles City native, Candy’s very first job was as a carhop at A&W, where she learned the value of great service, something she still provides daily, just in a different way. From managing the traffic flow of the President’s suite of offices to coordinating room reservations and preparing agendas, she keeps things organized while making sure students, faculty, and staff always feel welcome.

For Candy, MCC isn’t just a workplace; it’s a second home. She loves the family atmosphere and describes herself as compassionate, caring, helpful, loyal, and amenable.

Her simple yet powerful motto? "Treat people the way you want to be treated." Over the years, she has worked with three college presidents and two interim presidents, adapting and thriving through every transition, something she considers one of her greatest career achievements.

When she’s not keeping MCC running smoothly, Candy enjoys spending time with her grandchildren, a role she cherishes just as much as her professional one. And if she weren’t at MCC? “I would be sad that I didn’t have this job,” she admits, proving just how much she loves what she does.

Though Miles City will always be home, Candy has one big travel dream: visiting Ireland. Given her dedication, kindness, and hardworking spirit, it’s easy to imagine her making that dream come true someday. Until then, she’ll continue to be the heart of MCC, bringing warmth and organization to everyone who walks through the door.
