Adult Basic Education

The Learning Center at Miles Community College offers free individualized instruction in reading, English, and mathematics at the pre-college level. This program also prepares adults to test successfully for their Montana high school equivalency (Montana uses the ETS® High School Equivalency Test - or HiSET® exam), formerly G.E.D.

Adult Basic Education and HiSET® program enrollment is ongoing, though new students are required to complete an orientation prior to enrolling. Please plan on two hours for HiSET® orientation and two and a half hours to complete initial paperwork and placement exams when you begin your program. Please call the Learning Center at 406.874.6152 to schedule your orientation appointment. Free online HiSET® preparation to supplement in-person instruction is also available after placement exams are taken.

Please contact the Center for more information or submit a ABE/HiSET Information Request Form

HiSET® Testing Schedule and Cost

The MCC Learning Center offers Official HiSET® testing the first and third Wednesdays of each month (except college holidays) from 2:30-7:00pm. Online preregistration is required at least 24 hours in advance of each testing session.

The full HiSET® test (all five subtests) costs $65. Of this fee, $50 is paid to ETS® at the time of registration (requires a credit card), and this fee includes two retests. The remainder of the fee is a $15 test center charge paid to Miles Community College. A $6 test center fee will be charged for each retest. The test center fees may be paid at the MCC Business Office on or before the day of your first official test.

Individual subtests cost $12. $10 is paid to ETS® at the time of registration (does NOT include retests), and a $2 test center fee must be paid to Miles Community College. If you must retake an individual subtest, the test center fee is $6.

Test takers must register online at least 24 hours in advance. Please visit the HiSET® website for registration and additional test information. Please note the information for rescheduling and cancelling HiSET appointments. Refunds may not be available.

The Learning Center only offers paper-based HiSET® Testing. If you wish to take the computer-based HiSET®, please visit the OPI website for a list of other testing centers. Please note that testing schedules may vary at other testing centers.

Residency and minimum age requirements must be met to test in the state of Montana. Please visit the HiSET® website for details. In addition to any required documentation for 17- and 18-year olds, test takers must bring a valid photo ID, proof of residency, and proof of paid test center fee to their testing appointment. If you do not bring these required items, you will not be allowed to test.
